A friend of mine called me recently as one the 4 hooks somebody put into her ceiling for sex swing failed when she tested it. She'd seen my suspension rig and wanted me to sort hers out.

Anyway, when I checked out what had been done, this is what I found screwed into the ceiling:

Obviously, this not exactly strong and it could unscrew if somebody spins on it. It gets worse. The screw bolt's shaft is about 1.5". Whoever fitted them had carefully located the joists. The problem was that it was under 1.75" of plaster and thus the screw tip was 0.25" away from the joists. Doh! All four screws were merely driven into the plaster! Anyway, each pair of hooks has now been replaced with 2x4s, with a pair of eyebolts (large washers and nuts welded on), each bolted with 4 massive screw bolts into the joists.
